Dear Doctor:

On November 24, 1982, Mayor Jane Byrne announced that TYLENOL® acetaminophen products in tamper-resistant packaging were approved for sale in Chicago, thus ending a seven-week ban on their availability. New safety-sealed, tamper-resistant TYLENOL packaging will begin appearing in Chicago-area stores shortly and will be widely available by January. Extra-Strength TYLENOL® Capsules will be the first to appear in tamper-resistant packaging, followed by other forms of TYLENOL in early 1983.

Because you may receive questions from your patients about the new tamper-resistant packaging, we have enclosed a sheet that fully describes the new three-phase protection that will be available on all Extra-Strength TYLENOLE Capsules.

For your information, all TYLENOLE products removed from Chicago-area stores have been destroyed; all TYLENOL products shipped by McNeil Consumer Products Company to Chicago in the future will be in safety-sealed packaging. This applies not only to Regular Strength and Extra-Strength TYLENOL Tablets and Capsules, but to Children’s TYLENOL® products, CoTYLENOL® Cold Formula products, Maximum-Strength TYLENOL® Sinus Medication, SINE-AID® Sinus Headache products and COLDMAX® Cold Formula products. The sale of TYLENOL® with Codeine has also been reinstituted in its existing sealed packaging.

While the new safety-sealed TYLENOL packaging will help to reduce the potential for future tampering, McNeil and the FDA are encouraging all persons to carefully examine any medication before using it. We would appreciate your assistance in disseminating this advice, as well as information about our new packaging, to your patients.

MacNeil Consumer Products Company wishes to thank you for your continued trust and confidence in TYLENOL. If you have any questions, please call toll free, 1-800-237-9800.

Sincerely,
Thomas N. Gates, M.D.
