For example, “Who is the tallest in the zoo?” said one mom to a 7-month-old baby as she showed him the picture of a giraffe. He crawled away. He didn’t care about the giraffe. She circled around him and showed him the picture again. “Who is the tallest in the zoo?” And again he crawled away. Mom was relentless. She tried again, even as the baby again retreated. Mom is a baby’s patient teacher.

Studies show that two-thirds of 2½-year-olds choose dads over moms as play partners. A father will shift games repeatedly with a baby or child if the child gets bored (or if dad gets bored), and it’s like a roller-coaster ride for the baby. The baby gets disappointed when the first game ends, but then dad starts a new, even more exciting game. And in this process, babies learn to self-regulate. It’s critical for their development, and this makes dads’ high-speed, hyperactive, goofy way of playing extremely important. While moms are teachers, dads are guides. And babies need both.
