Dear Friend,
In the book Memoirs of a geisha by Arthur Golden, in chapter one, the main character Sayuri writes:
I wasn’t born and raised to be a Kyoto geisha. I wasn’t even born in Kyoto. I’m a fisherman’s daughter from a little town called Yoroido on the Sea of Japan.
If there is a gap between how you look and who you really are, people get hooked by you. Look at the example above.
Kyoto is cool. A girl born in Kyoto is cool. But a fisherman's daughter is, generally speaking, not so cool. (Of course, this is not my personal opinion, but stupid ordinary people's.)
But dear fisherman's daughters, don't worry. Here's the good news for you. Being a fisherman's daughter is what makes Sayuri interesting as a character.
Think about it:
A geisha who was born in Kyoto and raised to be a Geisha in Kyoto may look cool, but she has no unexpected element. No surprise here. And people want surprises.
Why did a fisherman's daughter decide to be a geisha?
There might be a special story behind it...
