The scientific term for working for food by choice is contra-freeloading. This approach to feeding is commonly practiced with zoo animals as a way of providing enrichment in their enclosure and is also becoming increasingly popular for pet dogs. It is recommended for pet cats as a form of enrichment and also to help resolve behavior issues. Again, take care to introduce food puzzles at a very easy level and use tasty treats to help get your cat interested in them. Other ways to encourage foraging include dividing the cat’s food into portions and hiding them around the house, including in high-up places.

In National Geographic España, in the article Guardianas de las abejas urbanas: 'No se matan, se rescatan', the author Paula Mateu writes:
Desde su fundación, Abeja Negra SOS ha realizado 639 rescates, de los cuales 420 colmenas han sido rehabilitadas con éxito. El proceso comienza cuando alguien contacta a la organización por la presencia de abejas en su hogar o entorno. “Nos envían evidencia, hacemos una entrevista para evaluar la situación y procedemos al rescate”, explica Adriana. Estos rescates pueden implicar largas horas de trabajo en condiciones extremas: alturas, espacios reducidos e incluso labores nocturnas.
Una vez rescatadas, las abejas son trasladadas a un apiario donde inicia su rehabilitación. Este proceso dura al menos seis meses y requiere alimentación constante, atención a enfermedades y un entorno adecuado para que la colmena pueda prosperar. Pasado este periodo, las colmenas pueden ser donadas a apicultores locales o mantenerse bajo el cuidado de Abeja Negra SOS.
“A los apicultores, como requisito, sólo les pedimos que cuenten con el material necesario. Normalmente les entregamos núcleos, que son más fáciles de cuidar. Un núcleo tiene un costo comercial de unos 2.500 pesos, pero nosotros cobramos sólo 100 pesos para cubrir nuestros materiales”, explica Véliz. Además, la organización canaliza a nuevos apicultores y ofrece capacitaciones parafomentar el cambio generacional en la apicultura, una actividad que enfrenta un declive preocupante.
